Enjoy the Mediterranean Sea

If you are a fan of underwater exploration, and your children are old enough, you can discover the gorgeous underwater world of Crete through scuba diving courses. There are many scuba diving centres throughout the island (mostly in the north), catering to divers of all levels. Popular scuba diving locations in Crete are the Bay of Afrata in Chania, Panormos Village in Rethymnon, Hersonissos Cape in Heraklion and “Nikolos” Reef in Lasithi. You can also enjoy sea kayaking on the south coast. There are some remarkable sea kayak routes that will take you to some of Crete’s most unique places including as Paleochora, Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro, Sfakia, Vai and Spinalonga Island.

Crete also offers plenty of surfing opportunities – wind surfing, paddle surfing and kite surfing – in locations including Elafonisi, Falassarna, Agia Marina, Plakias, Amoudara and Ierapetra.

Explore the mainland

The Gorge of Samaria is located in the south-west “White Mountains” in the province of Sfakia. It is surrounded by high mountain peaks such as Gigilos (2080m), Volakias (2116m), Melindaou (2153m), and others, that delimit the area of the National Park Of Samaria. The Samarian Gorge is one of the longest ravines in Europe.
